Defines a process for scanning text or documents to detect and redact personally identifiable information (PII) while generating a structured detection report. It applies whenever freeform text or uploaded files (PDF, DOCX, TXT) must be sanitized to protect privacy before sharing or storage. The system replaces detected PII—including names, emails, phone numbers, SSNs, mailing addresses, dates of birth, financial accounts, licenses, passports, and IP addresses—with standardized category placeholders, preserving original formatting and using consistent numbered tags for repeated individuals. Alongside the redacted text, it produces a tabular report listing each PII instance with its type, original value, placeholder, and location, plus notes on related fields when they form a single record. The procedure requires erring on the side of redaction when uncertain, while avoiding redaction of company or product names and job titles that do not identify specific individuals, and explicitly reporting when no PII is found.
